Depression is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and most times has led to suicide cases. However, researchers have recently discovered that when people engage in consistent yoga practices, their depression levels will be reduced and emotional disorder that usually leads to over-eating will be healed. This foundings were exposed at the yearly congress of the American Psychological Association, at their 125th edition. At the event, not less than four different research results were showcased, and all of them had the same facts, which is; yoga is very effective in combating depression.
A researcher from Veterans Affairs Health facility in San Francisco, Lindsey Hopkins, undertook an experiment to investigate further into the usefulness of Hatha yoga. He gathered 23 participants who were into yoga for the exercise. The experiment involved two intensive yoga practices in a week, and the duration lasted for eight weeks. The outcome revealed that the problems of depression reduced immensely, as well as torrents of negative contemplations.
In another research project carried out by Sarah Shallit, a scientist from Alliant International University, the same conclusion was reached. She worked on Bikram yoga otherwise called ‘steaming yoga’ and got the consequences as positive. She conducted her research on two separate teams of females. One of the team had 54 members whose ages ranged from 25 to 47 years and these women participated in two classes per week for two weeks. However, 50 percent of these females were put on the ‘wait-list,’ and that did not give them the chance to partake in the classes. Fortunately, the women who did the exercise saw apparent changes in their depression state. They improved greatly compared to their counterparts who could not go in for the classes.
Shallit pressed on in her investigations with a determination to reach a credible conclusion. She formed another team of women in a new examination still on Bikram yoga. She observed that this new group became more conscious of themselves and they developed a deeper feeling of kindness toward themselves better than before. Apart from that, each member of the team soon realized that they could manage the abnormal habit of unusual food consumption anomaly due to emotional stress and trauma that had been troubling them in the past before Shallit’s Bikram yoga program.
To further solidify this claim were two more investigations carried out by two professional researchers from one hospital in Massachusetts, Vollbehr Nina, and Nyer Maren. The duo of Vollbehr and Nyer experimented by forming their individual groups of participants who were mature people, but with the goal of finding a good impact, yoga has on depression.
The University of Utah also joined in the quest for yoga/depression relationship. Some researchers from the University conducted their own investigations with the goal of looking at the benefits of yoga on pain. They employed 15 yoga old timers, 18 volunteers and 14 people going through fibromyalgia, a sickness that cause the sufferers to over-react to pain.
During the experiment, the three teams were instructed to perform pressure on the thumbnail yoga that caused them slight pain. Those going through fibromyalgia felt more pain in their levels of low pressure, unlike the others who didn’t have the fibromyalgia. Also, when they were examined through an active MRIs, it was discovered that they were more alert in the region of their brains in relations to reaction to pain. On the other hand, the team members who were used to yoga practices recorded the strongest tolerance for pain.
According to the scientists, those whose reactions are not balanced or well organized will have problems coping with stress and depression.
Yoga is a useful way of managing stress, coping with depression and disturbed feeling. People will find it enticing to adopt it as far as depression, emotional disorder and pain management are concerned,
The study had also revealed more knowledge to the general public that good health on all grounds are interwoven and study of yoga shows that both physical and mental well-being is equally important.
All in all, these researchers reached the same results even though different methods were adopted. Yoga is a strong calisthenics that does not only improves the physical fitness but also takes care of the emotional and psychological health.
Yoga also revamps stress reaction process whenever it discovers restlessness and fatigue in the body, and this will imply a reduction in the incitement of physiological activities. These activities include respiratory revival, reducing the pressure of the blood, cutting down on the rate at which the heart works and helps to strengthen the flexibility of the body’s agility to accommodate stress.
Notwithstanding, these findings do not overrule the importance of the medical measures that might have been prescribed for a depressed patient by a physician. Yoga can only aid the modern medicine in healing the affected person. Hopkins was of the opinion that yoga is instrumental in making the healing process faster with the help of therapies, medications and other measures recommended by qualified doctors. She explained that the researchers (her inclusive), just carried out researches on yoga to confirm the hidden truth.
