What is the ‘Sauerkraut Diet,’ the Weight Loss Secret Trump Cabinet is Crazy About?
A simple jar of fermented cabbage has suddenly become one of the most talked-about foods in political circles. The so-called ‘Sauerkraut Diet’ has attracted attention after reports revealed that several senior members of the Trump administration have made it part of their daily routine. Supporters say it helps burn stubborn fat, improve gut health, and boost overall wellness.
The growing interest has sparked curiosity far beyond Washington. Many people now want to know if this eating plan is another passing health trend or a practical way to lose weight. The answer lies somewhere in the middle. Sauerkraut offers real health benefits, but it is not a magic food that melts fat on its own.
Why Has the Sauerkraut Diet Become So Popular?

Trump / IG / The eating plan is linked to Dr. Sean O’Mara, a physician known for his work on longevity and body composition.
His approach focuses on reducing visceral fat, the deep fat that surrounds internal organs and raises the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems.
Instead of counting calories alone, the plan encourages eating nutrient-rich whole foods. Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi are central to the diet. Grass-fed steak, eggs, and other natural foods also appear regularly on the menu. At the same time, sugar, processed carbohydrates, alcohol, and highly processed foods are removed.
The diet gained even more attention after reports that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. adopted it about a year before several other officials. He has publicly credited the eating plan with helping him lose around 20 pounds in one month while also improving his overall health and reducing everyday aches.
Vice President JD Vance is also reported to follow the plan. His meals are said to include eggs, sauerkraut, berries, pickles, and later in the day, beef or lamb served with another helping of fermented cabbage. The diet has reportedly become a regular topic of conversation among White House officials.
What Makes Sauerkraut So Special?
Sauerkraut is made by fermenting cabbage with salt. During fermentation, healthy bacteria grow naturally and create probiotics. These beneficial bacteria help support a healthy balance inside the digestive system.
A healthy gut does more than improve digestion. Scientists continue to study the connection between gut bacteria and overall health, including immune function, inflammation, and even mood. Although research is still growing, many experts agree that fermented foods can be part of a healthy eating pattern.
Sauerkraut also contains fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and several antioxidants. Fiber helps people stay full for longer, making it easier to avoid unnecessary snacking. That extra feeling of fullness may support weight management over time.
Another reason people like sauerkraut is its low-calorie content. A generous serving adds very few calories while providing satisfying texture and flavor. It can easily replace higher-calorie side dishes without making meals feel less filling.
The diet also encourages eating high-quality protein from foods such as eggs, beef, and lamb. Protein helps maintain muscle while supporting satiety. Combined with fewer processed foods and less added sugar, many people naturally reduce their daily calorie intake.
Does the Diet Have Any Downsides?

Janko / Pexels / Despite its growing popularity, health experts urge people to keep realistic expectations. Sauerkraut is healthy, but no single food can guarantee fast or lasting weight loss.
Sustainable results usually come from balanced eating, regular physical activity, and consistent habits.
One concern is sodium. Traditional sauerkraut contains a large amount of salt because salt is necessary for fermentation. Eating large portions every day may increase sodium intake, especially for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney problems.
