How Drew Carey Lost 80 Pounds and Transformed His Health
A major health scare often becomes a turning point. For Drew Carey, that shift came after serious medical warnings that could no longer be ignored. Over time, the host of “The Price Is Right” reshaped daily habits, dropped 80 pounds, and even reversed a long-term condition.
The process wasn’t built on shortcuts. It came down to discipline, consistency, and a complete rethink of food and lifestyle choices.
During a conversation on Where Everybody Knows Your Name, hosted by Ted Danson, Carey, 67, opened up about a heart attack he experienced in 2001. At first, the symptoms were brushed aside. That delay led to a medical procedure involving a stent placement in his heart.
That moment became a clear signal. Ignoring health was no longer an option.
Eating Habits Before the Change

Before shifting direction, daily meals reflected excess and imbalance. Carey described a typical restaurant order in simple terms:
“A steak, bread, loaded mashed potatoes, a couple of beers, then dessert. Vegetables were usually left untouched.”
This pattern showed a heavy intake of carbs, alcohol, and calorie-dense foods, with little focus on nutrition.
After the diagnosis, eating habits changed in a noticeable way. Meals became cleaner and more intentional. When dining out, the approach looked very different:
“The steak stays, but now it’s paired with vegetables. Bread and potatoes are skipped. Water replaces everything else. Alcohol is completely out.”
This shift removed unnecessary calories while increasing nutrient intake. Hydration also became a priority, with water replacing all other beverages.
The No-Carb Strategy
In a 2010 interview with People, Carey shared details of a strict low-carb routine that played a major role in his transformation. The structure was simple but required commitment.
Carb-heavy foods were completely removed from the diet, including bread, pizza, and processed grains, along with corn, beans, and all forms of starchy foods.
His daily meals followed a consistent pattern. Breakfast often included egg whites or Greek yogurt with fruit. Snacks leaned toward fresh fruit. Dinner usually featured grilled chicken with steamed vegetables.
He summed it up clearly:
“There were a few slip-ups, but overall, carbs were off the table. Not even a cracker.”
This disciplined approach helped him move from a size 44 to a size 33. More importantly, it contributed to reversing his Type 2 diabetes.
Another major adjustment came from eliminating beverages that often go unnoticed in weight gain. Carey removed alcohol, soda, coffee and tea.
He kept it simple: “Only water. Nothing else.”
This single decision reduced daily calorie intake significantly and supported overall health.
Exercise That Supported the Transformation

Diet alone wasn’t the only factor. Physical activity played a steady role in maintaining progress. Carey committed to at least 45 minutes of cardio each day.
This routine helped improve heart health, increase energy levels, and accelerate fat loss. Over time, consistency made the effort feel natural rather than forced.
As results became visible, staying on track became easier. Seeing progress created its own momentum.
Carey explained it in a straightforward way:
“Once the weight started dropping and clothes fit better, stopping didn’t feel like an option.”
A personal factor tied directly to his career also played a role. Working on camera added pressure and pushed him to feel confident in his appearance. That motivation kept him consistent and focused on his progress.
Drew Carey’s weight loss journey highlights the impact of steady, intentional changes. A serious health warning led to better food choices, daily movement, and the removal of habits that no longer served a purpose. The results went beyond appearance. Losing 80 pounds and reversing Type 2 diabetes showed what consistency can achieve over time.
